Shorty's Liquor: A Short Family Story

It was 2001 when Dave and his cousin Marty wrote the first words of the Shorty’s story, setting up a tiny 50 square metre store attached to the back of the Australian Hotel in the Rocks. It was called ‘The Australian Wine Emporium’ and it served local businesses and international tourists with an array of fine wines, focusing on local drops. This retail business continued to grow in 2004 under a different name, the newly crowned ‘Shorty’s Liquor’, in much larger premises in the Rhodes Shopping Centre.

However it was four years after this that Shorty’s (as you’ve come to know and love) properly launched, taking over an Ultimo warehouse location and turning an eye to beverage supply for under-serviced corporate customers.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Shorty’s quickly became the key player in corporate beverage solutions, supplying to almost every major corporate business in Sydney’s CBD, from creative agencies to blue-chip businesses, catering companies and iconic hospitality venues. As well as corporate beverage supply we work closely with our valued clients to help manage their event needs, including organising tastings, wine dinners and cellaring advice.

As the business has grown, so too has the Shorty’s team. Today more than twenty staff - from wine experts to customer service representatives, digital marketers and delivery drivers – operate from an ever-growing Ultimo warehouse space, packed with the most remarkable wines and drinks from around the world.

In recent years a new chapter of the Shorty’s story has been penned, launching the fine wine and premium spirits destination called wine.com.au in 2016. This new online channel caters to true connoisseurs of the industry, offering super rare wines from around the world and a comprehensive gifting range for collectors and those looking for special gifts. In 2017 we also began to partner up with Wattle & Jones to offer a more nuanced gifting solution for our corporate clients. In 2018 we’re also privileged to launch the next chapter in our customer service journey, by crafting a magazine for our clients and fans called ‘The Drop’. This publishing journey, capturing and telling some of the curious and engaging tales of the drinks industry, is just another evolution of our focus on adding value to the lives of our customers.
