One of Australia's most iconic wineries, widely celebrated for their diversity, history, and craftsmanship.

The success of Penfolds has been driven by the generations of visionaries and innovators. From the beginning in 1844 to today, the merging of science, art and innovation has driven Penfolds to become one of Australia’s most famed and respected winemakers. Despite great success, Penfolds never rests on its laurels.

In 2012 Penfolds released its most innovative project to date - 12 handcrafted ampoules of the rare 2004 Kalimna Block Cabernet Sauvignon. Two years later, Penfolds celebrated the 170th anniversary – having just picked up a perfect score of 100 for the 2008 Grange in two of the world’s most influential wine magazines.

Penfolds Bin 389

Vintage 2017

Bin 389 was often referred to as ‘Baby Grange’, in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960 by the legendary Max Schubert, this was the wine that helped forge Penfolds reputation with red wine drinkers by combining the structure of cabernet sauvignon with the richness of shiraz.

‘A 54/46% blend from McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Wrattonbully, matured for 12 months in American hogsheads (29% new). Like most of its siblings, is complex and compelling, the bouquet setting the scene, and the palate filling it. Black fruits, gently vanilla oak, superfine but persistent tannins are but the start.’ – 97 Points | James Halliday

Penfolds Bin 389

Vintage 2018

Exemplifying the judicious balance of fruit and oak, Bin 389 highlights the generous mid-palate Penfolds is known for.

'Very deep, dark red colour with a good tint of purple. The bouquet is sweetly super-ripe with loads of blackberry jam and fruit sweetness, the palate likewise sumptuously deep in fruit with oak keeping very much in the background. The flavour fills the mouth superbly and continues long into the aftertaste, harmonised by lashings of soft, ripe tannins. There are definite notes of cassis and herb from the cabernet component and the oak contributes a subtle trace of charred timber that complements the fruit. Sumptuous fruit sweetness. A ripping wine that seems to be less oak-marked than this wine traditionally is.' - 96 points | Huon Hooke

Penfolds Bin 389

Vintage 2019

'A dark horse vintage with the shape of Bin 389 and the torque of Bin 707. A fascinating but quite different Bin 389 revealing the light and shade of multi-regional sourcing and the hallmarks of the Penfolds House Style. Should last the distance.' - 96 points | Andrew Caillard MW
