Mr Riggs Outpost Coonawarra Cabernet 2018
The 2016 Coonawarra Cabernet is supplied from the Wetherall vineyards located in the heart of the Coonawarra wine region, provided from the “Thomas” vineyard and the “Harrison” vineyard both named after Michael and Michelle Weatherall’s children. The sites are located in the northern end of the region and are traditionally some of the earlier ripening blocks with low yields and excellent concentration. Generally, this area is flat: its maximum elevation just 58 metres above sea level. The variation, however, lies in the different soil depths ranging from red-brown clay loam to brown sandy loam, all over limestone.
The 2016 vintage was an early one with full ripeness and maturity reached slightly ahead of what is considered normal with limited supplementary irrigation used. This wine is intensely bright, floral, and fragrant on the nose with lovely length on the palate — a perfectly balanced Cabernet, very worthy of its reputation.
