Mr Riggs Mrs Viognier McLaren Vale 2016
The 2016 Viognier fruit is from Ben’s own tenure at Piebald Gully, located in McLaren Vale’s coolest and wettest sub-region Clarendon, bordering the Adelaide Hills. It’s planted in deep sand over orange ironstone impregnated friable clay producing aromatic, elegant fruit. Ripening occurs at Piebald Gully sometimes up to two weeks later than in the rest of McLaren Vale, and the area averages some 30% more rainfall (700mm pa) than the rest of the district. A dry winter and spring meant the fruit set well leading to high yields. The fruit was high quality with full fruit flavour.
This is a delicate, floral number that slowly seduces you with each sip. With the Viognier, Ben aims for a more delicate and elegant style than usual wines. Containing floral apricots and blossom characters abound, while a wonderfully complex integration honeysuckle and other tropical flavours cross the palate.
