Mount Gay rum started its famous life in 1703 when businessman Sir John Gay opened his own New World rum distillery on the island of Barbados. He began making sophisticated rum, exporting on tall ships and introducing Mount Gay in the colonies and Europe. George Washington is known to have been a fan, and Mount Gay Eclipse Rum continues to be the gold standard, still made in the oldest, continuously running rum distillery in the world. A great rum neat on ice or in a Monaco or Orange Eclipse cocktail.
