Cloudy Bay Te Koko Sauvignon Blanc 2016
Te Koko is recognised as one of the finest labels from renowned Marlborough producer Cloudy Bay. The fruit for the 2014 Te Koko Sauvignon Blanc were sourced from the oldest vines across four vineyard blocks located in Brancott, Ben Morven, Fairhall and Central Wairau Valley. These grapes deliver elegant, pure fruited aromatics that make Cloudy Bay Te Koko Sauvignon Blanc, a wine that reveals more flavours with every sip.
Te Koko is a complex and full-bodied Sauvignon Blanc, with wild ferments, old french oak maturation superbly integrated around dominant fruit characters such as pear and apple. Guava and gooseberry are present on the nose, preceded by aromas of herbs, spices and honey, and followed by citrus and nuts on the dry, refreshing finish. Pairs well with fresh sea food, oily fish, salmon tartare and seared scallops.

Te Koko is on a steep trajectory of ascent, finer, more harmonious and more expressive than ever, yet it's the tiny details that have made the difference. The core of its personality remains untouched, but, in the words of maker Nick Lane, it's been pared back in palate gregariousness. He says taking it from ten percent new oak to eight percent has made a bigger difference that you might imagine, and he's dead right - the fruit has never looked better, nor the oak more subdued. This wine epitomises sauvignon's ability to somehow harmonise electric energy with unfathomable complexity. There are perfumed florals here, mixed spice, gooseberry pie, custard apple, preserved lemon, lantana, woodspice, hazelnut cream, dried herbs, stone fruits and citrus of all kinds. Phew! Crucially, it retains honed focus, thanks to crunchy acid definition and outstanding line and length.
