Cape Mentelle Shiraz 2017
The nose is varietaly expressive with notes of white and black pepper, spicy cardamom and an elegant sent of wisteria. Hints of rich candied orange peel, grated coconut, cedar and cigar box add to the enticing aromas. The intense concentration of flavours reflect the aromatics. Bursts of complex black fruits, small, ripe berries and liqueur cherries are supported by notes of orange marmalade, cinnamon syrup and ripe, chewy tannins. A very textural wine, the finish is long, intrinsically structured with lingering characters of caramelised oak and fresh crusty brioche. Pairs well with jamon de bellota, blue cheese, fig paste, duck in plum sauce, wild mushroom tart.

Vintage 2016 - Destemmed, fermented on skins for a couple of weeks, basket pressed and then matured in large oak vats. The pathway to, as it turned out, a superb shiraz release from Cape Mentelle. This is a beauty. Roasted meats, black pepper, some smoky reduction, a plushness and yet, overwhelmingly, a spicy discipline throughout. Completely unafraid of tannin, all peppery and nutty and firm. Black, polished, gorgeous cherries. Black, red and purple notes. Immaculately clean, bossed into shape by all that dry tannin, and yet exciting to drink, smell, revisit.
