Cape Mentelle Chardonnay 2017
One of the Margaret River’s “Founding Five” wineries, and named for nearby Cape Mentelle, the winery was established by the three Hohn brothers in 1970 with just 16 hectares of vines. In 1985 David Hohn established Cape Mentelle’s sister winery, Cloudy Bay, in New Zealand, which won world recognition with its Sauvignon Blanc and opened the door for the exceptional Cape Mentelle Margaret River Chardonnay to gain its impressive international reputation.
Intense lifted aromatics of ripe citrus, white peaches and grilled pineapple abound in this wine with hints of toasted nuts, wisteria blossom and savoury curd undertones. Notes of panettone bread crumbs and caramelised sugar offer detail of the elegant oak program carefully employed. Richly textural, flavours of white peach, cantaloupe and candied citrus peel burst forth on the palate. Fresh yet plush, warm notes of smoky toasted oak with creamy brioche persist for a long, complex finish. Slowly unfurling, this wine will reward great patience in the cellar as it unwinds to reveal all of its detail. Pairs well with scrambled eggs with streaky bacon, mushroom risotto, crayfish cooked over salty driftwood.

Vintage 2017 - “Predominantly from the estate vineyard, hand-picked, whole bunch-pressed, barrel-fermented in French barriques (one-third new), part wild, part cultured, yeast-fermented, matured for 9 months with weekly battonage. Gleaming straw-green; a super-elegant, yet extremely complex, wine, with pink grapefruit to the fore, balanced in both texture and flavour by buttery brioche.”
